WEEK 26-SON-RISE DAY 32 - Rohan was in a mood to dance

Rohan has been going though NAET therapies also. And we noticed some regression in Rohan's behavior in terms of interaction and eye contact. So we reduced the therapies from twice a week to once per week. And we can see that Rohan is more interactive. Rohan is still trying to find his sounds and is still more comfortable with Ba sound. Though he tried saying Ba with three intervals like trying to make more words.

I went over yesterday to run another therapy session with Rohan. He was not ready to come down to playroom even when I tried giving him cashew. Finally I tried giving him Pistachio and he came down with me to playroom.

He started stimming with food in his hand, so I joined him also. He was trying to put pistachio nuts on his legs and enjoying the moment as they fell on the floor. I did the same thing using plastic ears borrowed from Potato Head toy !! He immediately noticed me and I used the opportunity if he wants to read Dora Coloring Book.

He immediately got up and pointed at the Dora book, even though it was hiding behind the other toys. he knew where the book usually is so pointed in that direction, even though book could not be seen from the shelf. I got the book for him and I asked him to do some coloring in the book, asked him to show me Baskedball in the book. So he followed my instructions happily.

Rohan was now again sitting down on the crash mat playing and stimming with his food. This time I joined him again. He finished eating his food and now wanted to go out of the room. I made him understand and distracted him to play with me on chalkboard.

He came towards me and took the the chalkboard from me. I got the chalks and told him "I will draw a nice house for you with Teddy bear next to it". I did my drawing and he was watching it. Now I gave him colors and asked him to color different parts of the house like window, door, chimney etc. He will try to color by drawing a line in the house with chalk, and stand up and jump.

I made that into game to "Dance". Anytime he will listen to my instructions and color , I will stand up with him and dance. He enjoyed it . This went on till we came out of the room. In between he will come to me and try to put his head into my legs like asking me for hug.

In between we also played the running game, I will count 1 to 5 and we will run on "Run".

Overall it was a very good interactive session. Looks like if Rohan can get his words we can play more and more !!

Rohan was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. And recently got diagnosed with Apraxia . R is now 4 years old. We started SON-RISE program with R couple of weeks backs. WEEK 25-SON-RISE DAY 31 - Rohan was more playful

Rohan has been going though NAET therapies also. And we noticed some regression in Rohan's behavior in terms of interaction and eye contact. So we reduced the therapies from twice a week to once per week. And we can see that Rohan is again more interactive. Rohan is still trying to find his sounds and is still more comfortable with Ba sound.

I went downstairs with Rohan in the son-rise room. Rohan pointed at the Gym Ball making "Ba" sound. I took the Ball down from the shelf. He was pushing me in gentle way like telling me "sit down on the ball". Then he sat in my lap and again made B sound. This was indication that Rohan wants to Bounce on the ball. Rohan seemed very happy while bouncing on the ball.

In between when I stopped he will get down from the ball and will run around the room. He will eat his chopped fruit from the tupperware using fork, drop the fruit on the carpet. He tried to put fruit back in plastic tupperware but won't like it sticking to his hand. He will close the tupperware, and if it wont close would get frustrated. I will ask him if he wants help and he will use sign language to tell me 'Ye's. After that we will bounce on the ball again.

Above cycle went like 4 to 5 times.

At one point he sat down and started stimming with food in his hand. I took some toys in my hand and joined him. When ever he looked at me I will try to grab his attention to play some other game. And we ended up reading "Dora" book. Rohan even pointed at the Ball in the book and then pointed at the ball in the room.

Rohan did scribbling using colors on the chalk board.

After wards we started running game. I will count 1,2 and run . And we both will run to other end of the room. Afterwards I changed the count from 1 to 5 and run. Rohan enjoyed this game also. It seemed we were back to old days, days before the regression.

In between Rohan wanted to come out of the room. he tried for like 15 minutes. But I praised him, made him understand. He did cried little bit for not letting him out of the room. But finally after 15 minutes of try he was fine again and back to the running game.

Now he just wanted to stay int he room. Time was up so I asked him "Lets Go out of the room" .

It was wonderful session. I am just hoping for Rohan that he can say more words :)

WEEK 24-SON-RISE DAY 30 - Rohan tried to play vegetable game

Rohan has been going though NAET therapies also. In last month or so, we have seen some regression in Rohan's behavior in terms of interaction and eye contact. Rohan is still trying to find his sounds and is more comfortable with Ba sound. Though he is now exploring more sounds.

I have been busy in organizing fundraising efforts for Rohan, Any help will be appreciated at www.rohansjourney.com

Yesterday after gap of 2 weeks I went to Rohan's house to run my play-therapy session. Rohan came down with me to play-room with Pretzels in his hand. He sat down on the Blue Crash Mat and started eating his pretzel. He left little piece of pretzel in his hand and started stimming with it.

After that he took me towards the wall which had a crayon drawing of little spider. He was trying to take it down so I helped him. He pointed towards the other end of wall , basically trying to tell me to put it there. So I did.

After that he started running from one corner of the room to other corner. I joined him. In between I will get an eye contact for couple of seconds. So i will tickle him, sing him a song and at one point we holded hands and jumped on crash mat together.

At one point I was able to make him run on count of 1,2 and run.

He gave me a longer eye contact and I took the opportunity to ask him if he wants to play with "Pretend n Play vegetable cutter" - To my surprise he sat down and we got through couple of rounds cutting the vegetables.

Then he again got up and started running from one corner of the room to other.

Once the session ended, I asked him if he wants to help me to put the games back. He did helped me with one of the games to put it back on shelf, But after that he was lost again in his thoughts.

I am always trying to ask Rohan questions like - Did you goto school today ? Do you like going to School ? They are just questions for now, I am stillw aiting for the answers !!

Rohan is still struggling founding his voice due to verbal Apraxia. He tries to say B for everything nowadays

Yesterday I went for my session with Rohan. They whole session lasted for an hour. After that Rohan took me towards the door and asked me to open the door using sign language.

As we both entered the room, Rohan pointed towards the beach ball and I brought it down from the shelf for him. We bounced on the ball just for couple of minutes. After that Rohan started stimming.

In between when he will give me eye contact, I will try to sing songs to get his attention. I also pointed to certain games , but he seems to be not interested or paying attention. Rohan was just lost in his deep thoughts.

At one point - I brought the chalk board down and started scribbling on the board with chalk. Rohan came to me and he scribbled with me also.

After that Rohan went back to stimmimg. He got up and jumped on the floor for couple of times, I did the same with him.

In between at some point he tried to make some double sound like Ca ka. But not sure.

Rohan is nowadays more into stimming and not as much in playing. We have been trying to find things or toys that may catch his interest. Chalk board was a surprise to me, Hopefully Rohan can give me more surprises like that !!

Rohan is still struggling founding his voice due to verbal Apraxia. He tries to say B more than other sounds. I heard him trying Va.

Yesterday after 2 weeks finally I had my chance to run the play-therapy session with Rohan. I went over to Rohan's place and said "Hello Rohan". He looked at me and waived with his hands. We went down in the playroom.

Rohan was stimming for about 60 minutes during the 90 minutes session. But he was exploring some voices mostly like Ba. I heard Va also when I sang the sond "Wheels on the bus go round and round" .

I had to give Rohan 2 cashews to come down and have session with me. Rohan was stimming with those 2 Cashews for the longest time. He was eating them like a birdie. He was rotating them in his fingers lying on the floor. In between he gave me couple of eye-contact but they were like for a second. I did tickled him, sang poem for him during those sessions.

Finally cashew were All done and in Rohan's stomach, He asked me to get the Gym Ball down from the shelf. I sat down and he bounced with me on the Gym ball. He was having very much fun with it.

After that we went upstairs.

Overall he was stimming majority of the session but still was aware of my actions !!

We always wait for surprises to happen when it comes to Rohan :)

Rohan is going through NAET therapies twice a week and since the start of therapies, we have noticed that Rohan has been stimming more and lost more in his thoughts. But at the same time he is trying more sounds, interacting more in other ways. We have also noticed that his appetite is little lost.

We will take it day by day and see what  next !!

I have not been writing too much, Weather is changing and thus Rohan. Rohan has been struggling with Cold,Flu and Fever due to weather changes. So was not able to run play-therapy session with him

Rohan has been going for NAET therapies, which has reduced number of play-therapy sessions in the evening. Since the therapies started - he seems to make more sounds, but he seems to regress in other aspects like eye-contact, throwing more tantrums and is more lost now. We are hoping its a phase and will pass by. Rohan has been going through NAET therapies since 2 months now. We will give it couple of more weeks and see how it goes !!

Its like choose your battle - Not sure what's working and what not.

Life with Autism will be never boring , it will be always full of adventures !! Autism requires patience and hard work.  Do you have that ?

WEEK 20 - SON-RISE DAY 27 - R was playing with me even in that stimming

R was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. And recently got diagnosed with Apraxia . R is now 4 years old. We started SON-RISE program with R couple of weeks backs. SON-RISE is a Play-therapy program that I am volunteering for . The Play-Therapy is associated with son-rise.org to treat his symptoms related to Autism. This is just one of the multiple therapies he is going through. Meet and Support Rohan at www.rohansjourney.com

Rohan is still struggling founding his voice due to verbal Apraxia. Now He will say B with prompt but that's about it.

I had my 75 minute session with Rohan yesterday. This session was much better than last session. He was playing much better. Last month we did not see too much motivation in Rohan to play with any of the volunteers. He was stimming most of the time in play-room. so in our monthly meetings Rohan's parents suggested not too put too many verbal demands in front of Rohan - like we should not place demands for him to say sounds, words. And looks like since everyone reduced those demands, Rohan is now interacting more in playroom also. Its like some pressure just came off from Rohan's shoulder.

Remember Rohan and Verbal Apraxia due to which making any sort of sounds takes a lot from him. He still just says 'Ba', once a while 'aa' or 'ee'

Yesterday Rohan just wanted to bounce on the ball. In between when I will stop bouncing he will prompt himself to say "Ba".

Rohan also played with Balloons by throwing them up in the air, trying to do what I did. Though his was more like freeing the balloon out of his hands on the floor. But he tried and was trying to imitate my actions.

For about 25-30 minutes Rohan was stimming using cashew in his hand. I tickled him in between and he will response to it by smiling or moving my hand away.

Over all this was much interactive session than last one.

WEEK 19 - SON-RISE DAY 26 - R was stimming for 45 minutes

R was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. And recently got diagnosed with Apraxia . R is now 4 years old. We started SON-RISE program with R couple of weeks backs. SON-RISE is a Play-therapy program that I am volunteering for . Rohan is still struggling founding his voice due to verbal Apraxia. Now He will say B with prompt but thats about it.

I had my 75 minutes session with R. He did asked twice to get out of the room, but somehow ticking him distracted him back in the room.

I joined R in the playroom while R was having play-therapy session with his Mom. He was stimming lying down on the ground. As soon as I entered the room,he saw me and pointed towards the Ball ....prompting himself to make B sound.
I got the gym ball down from the shelf and we bounced on the ball. When I stopped bouncing he will prompt himself to say ''Ba', which means bounce him more.

In between the session I asked R to say more aa,ee and he prompted himself to say those sounds.

Once we were done bouncing the ball, he pointed at shelf to get the Potato Head down. We played with Potato head. The potato head game went for like 5-7 minutes and was interactive.

Once we are done playing with potato head game, Rohan was more into stimming. His stimming included climbing on the table and sitting down rubbing his toes, He was walking across the perimeter of the room. In between he will give me eye contact. But he did not wanted to play with any games. Maybe we need to just come up with more ideas for fun games for him.

Rohan's mom told me that they even got some feedback from the school saying that he is making less eye contact and is less interactive nowadays.

We are trying to figure out what caused this regression. Rohan is going though NAET therapies and is also on special diets and diet supplements.

WEEK 18 - SON-RISE DAY 25 - R wanted to either bounce on the ball or stimming

R was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. And recently got diagnosed with Apraxia . R is now 4 years old. We started SON-RISE program with R couple of weeks backs. SON-RISE is a Play-therapy program that I am volunteering for . The Play-Therapy is associated with son-rise.org to treat his symptoms related to Autism. This is just one of the multiple therapies he is going through. Meet and Support Rohan at  www.rohansjourney.com

Rohan is still struggling founding his voice due to verbal Apraxia. Now He will say B with prompt but thats about it.

Yesterday I had about 90 minutes son-rise session with R. He entered the room with 2 pretzel sticks and lay down on his crash-mat. He was stimming with the pretzel sticks, so I joind him. Somewhere in between that stimming I got his attention and now he pretended to feed me pretzels from his hand. He finally ate the pretzels
In between he will get up from the crash mat and jump on floor, back to crash-mat. I did the same with him.

R got up from crash-mat and pointed to get the big gym ball of the shelf. He took my hands to make me sit on the ball. And then he used his hands telling me to lift him up while he sat in my lap. He prompted himself the sound "B" to bounce. So we bounced on the Ball. In between I was asking him to scream "Aa", "ee", "Ma". So he did scream "Aa" but with his tongue out and lowered to his mouth. For "Ma" he just said "Ba" again. This went on for like 10-15 minutes .

R bounded twice with me, one time facing the mirror and other time facing me, though he was not looking at me.

R was again back on crash-mat after we were done bouncing on the ball. At some point taking advantage of the eye-contact I took the Baby-Einstein alphabets down on the floor. But he mostlyy used them for stimming. Book for letter "B" had Banana on it and he again pretended to eat it with me.

Now he wanted to go out of the son-rise playroom. So I explained him we have to play more. But he still wanted to get out of the room. I walked away from him and sat in the corner making some sounds with my tongue. He noticed me and came back on crash mat.

But now R was just stimming on the crash-mat. he will get up, jump on the floor and back to crash mat.

Finally it was time for me to go home also, so we got out of the room.

So looks like R wants to talk but does not know how.

WEEK 17 - SON-RISE DAY 24 - R seemed tired and stimming with piece of Carrot

was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. When I refer to Stimming , it is the repetitive behavior R does while lost in his world

Besides all other challenges the biggest challenge for R is finding his voice. It seems now he tries but sounds are not able to make there way out right now. He is able to say Ba more clear but rest of the sounds still have to make its way.

Yesterday I had another son-rise session with R.  I took some chopped Organic Carrots in a sandwich bag with me to feed my son during the drive to R's place. We reached R's home and I had sandwich bag with Carrots in it. I screamed who want Carrots.... My son Y, R's sister A came running to me and grabbed piece of Carrot from me. I asked R this time specifically do you want Carrot pointing at the bag of chopped Carrots. He looked at me , gave me smile and came to me. He grabbed the bag of carrots from me and started eating them one by one.

While he was busy eating carrots , I took him downstairs to run the play-therapy session. Once R reached the last piece of carrot, he took that piece and started stimming with it. He lay down on the crash mat and was rolling the chopped piece of Carrot in his fingers. He gave me eye-contact once a while. During those eye-contacts I asked him if he was interested in playing any games. But he did not responded, so I joined him in his stimming.

At some point he pretend to feed me the Carrot. I took his fingers and pretend to eat the food from it with funny noises. He started laughing. This went for couple of minutes and he went back to stimming.

At some point he got up from the crash mat and started jumping on floor and back to crash mat. I did the same and made cheering noises at times while jumping on the floor. It became a game and he was enjoying it.

Again R went back to stimming. In between he did gave me some sounds mostly Ba. He did made some other sounds but Not sure what were they  !!

After an hour he wanted to get out of the room, so I readily agreed thinking he may be tired as he was yawning also during the session.

WEEK 16 - SON-RISE DAY 23 - R was stimming but he was still with me

R was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. And recently got diagnosed with Apraxia . R is now 4 years old. We started SON-RISE program with R couple of weeks backs. SON-RISE is a Play-therapy program that I am volunteering for . The Play-Therapy is associated with son-rise.org to treat his symptoms related to Autism. When I refer to Stimming , it is the repetitive behavior R does while lost in his world

Besides all other challenges the biggest challenge for R is finding his voice, He started trying more sounds with the help of Intensive Therapy. But he is still only able to say Aa, Ba. He keeps on putting his tongue out for every sound he makes. Even after intense speech therapies, R is not able to make proper use of his tongue, lips, back of throat .

This son-rise session was little different. I felt R was tired. He was stimming more. But at the same time he was following whatever I asked anytime he gave me Green Light.

As I entered R's driveway, he was standing in garage with him mom. I came out of the car and he gave me this wonderful look with smile. He also gave a cute look to my son Y.We went down the in the playroom. R went towards the crash mat.

R started crawling on the crash mat. So I joined him in his stimming. While we were on crash mat we played "feet war". Trying to touch each others feets in the air.

R again played Pretend n  Play the vegetable cutter. R was trying hard to say the names of vegetables that we were cutting. Even though only Aa or Ba sounds came out. But I think I did heard him trying to say "T" or "Ar" also.

R also played the Flash card games with me. He showed me Broccoli,Bed,TV,Plum,Apple,Banana,Umbrella and some more things. I asked him holding the flash card with "Bed" on it, R sleeps on ...so he filled in the Blank "Be" for me, I am not sure if he said Bed completely or just "Be".

We did some jumping on crashmat by holding our hands, on the count of 1,2 and jump

Overall it was interesting session. I felt R was more interactive, even though he was in between trying to stim more.We were in the play room for more than 90 minutes , but he still wanted to play with me and did not asked to come out of the room.

I need to search for some more new pretend n play games for R. I am still finding his voice, waiting for him to call me using his words !!

WEEK 15 - SON-RISE DAY 22 - R was taking my fingers to scratch him

This session was similar to my last one. We played with Vegetable cutter Pretend n Play. I joined in his stimming. He won't let me bounce the ball. Somehow the game of bouncing the ball he will only play with certain people. He wont play that with me. He gave me much better look during those High-Fives !!

I did realized during the session, that he was trying to make sounds......but he was only getting As or Ba sounds out. He will put his tongue out instead of lifting it up. He wont even use voice back of his throat. I did celebrated his effort.

The interesting thing that happened during the session - R had gotten bit by some mosquito. So he got a little Redness on his shoulders. He kept on taking my fingers asking me to scratch there. He was enjoying everytime I scratched him. I just hope he could have used his words to ask me for scratching his shoulders.

We are trying our best, including R. We r waiting for that day when a miracle will happen and he will be able to use his voice.

WEEK 15 - SON-RISE DAY 21 - R knows when you show energy to play with him

R was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. And recently got diagnosed with Apraxia . R is now 4 years old. We started SON-RISE program with R couple of weeks backs. SON-RISE is a Play-therapy program that I am volunteering for . The Play-Therapy is associated with son-rise.org to treat his symptoms related to Autism. When I refer to Stimming , it is the repetitive behavior R does while lost in his world

Besides all other challenges the biggest challenge for R is finding his voice, He started trying more sounds with the help of Intensive Therapy.

Usually I go for my therapy sessions on Wednesday, But sometimes I get bonus round - a playful priviledge to spend more time with R .....Always Fun.

Yesterday I went to my sister's house. And I volunteered to play with R in son-rise room. R was trying to take his mom in the son-rise room also. But at some point , I told him we will bounce on the Ball, R went with me downstairs. But when we came inside the room, R did not enjoyed sitting and bouncing the ball with me. I came to know afterwards that R likes sitting in the lap , facing towards the person and than bounce off the ball.

Oh, I am sorry my little,dear,cute - R .

But we did enjoyed pretend n play with Vegetable cutter. R even tried to make sound for Ah and Ba.

The first half session was little rocky, I felt he was not enjoying and that's why he went to stimming. At one point he even gave me sign language to go out. Not sure if he was tired also. But second half of the session was really fun. We did not even realized when R's mom came into room and reminded me that it was getting late, I should go back home to take care of my family :)

Dear R, You are always FUN, If someone is not realizing that they still need to know you, understand you :)

WEEK 14 - SON-RISE DAY 20 - R was very much listening to me !!

Yesterday was 4th of July, "Independence Day". I was just thinking to myself, when are our kids going to get independence from Autism , to live independent life !!

Anyways with lot of thoughts I reached R's home for play-therapy session. Its like magic  when I see R's face, every thought just goes away trying to search for a smile from him. He was sitting on a chair holding onto Red Plum. I said "Hi Rohan" looking into his eyes. He gave me this shy smiley look. It was so cute and mischievous. I asked him do you  want to go and play Bounce,Bounce !! He immediately got up from his seat and came down with me to play-room.

R was still holding onto his Red Plum. I asked him do you want to help me cut the vegetables. so he pointed me to take the Pretend & play vegetable cutter game down from shelf.

We must have spend like 30-40 minutes playing it. But this time I had different experience . I asked R "what is this ? holding a fruit or vegetable in my hand." He was trying hard to make sounds to tell me what are they.

Somewhere R went back to his favorite stimming, by crawling on kitchen floor on his back, with his legs bended. I joined him also.

At some point when he gave me eye-contact. I asked him do you want to show me the house in flash-cards. He pointed at the flash-cards on shelf. I got the flash-cards down and R took all the flashcards out on the floor.

He was pointing at Plum,Pear,Tomato and Apple and gave me those flash-cards in my hand. Then he gave me the sound for "eat". So I pretended them to eat. At one point when Plum came on flash card, He pointed at the Plum from pretend n play game.

2 hours just passed by like that, we did not even realized that how much time passed by. Suddenly R's mom came in to room to give him something to drink, As R was suppose to get ready and get energy for his Speech therapy :)

I got some real good feedback from R's dad about my session. He told me that even if R tries to make a sound, even though it may not be correct, celebrate it. He also told me to give him pause so that he can process the information to say it. Last but not least I should not ask hims same thing twice, because it may be boring for R.

R's mom and dad told me that I should learn to prompt him for sounds, since he was showing interest in trying out the sounds with me.

Dear R,  I am waiting for that day, when you talk and I am just quietly listening to you !!

WEEK 13 - SON-RISE DAY 19 - Pretend n PLay

R was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. And recently got diagnosed with Apraxia . R is now 4 years old. We started SON-RISE program with R couple of weeks backs. SON-RISE is a Play-therapy program that I am volunteering for . The Play-Therapy is associated with son-rise.org to treat his symptoms related to Autism. When I refer to Stimming , it is the repetitive behavior R does while lost in his world

Besides all other challenges the biggest challenge for R is finding his voice, He just says Baah for everything.

Yesterday I went to R's house to run  play-therapy. R was stimming by crawling on kitchen floor on his back, with his legs bended . I tried several times to make him come down to play-room, but he was enjoying his stimming a lot. Even the pistachios did not worked. Finally R's mom brought the cookie and that made him come down to the playroom.

R is now into "eat" pretend and play game.

We played for about 30 minutes with Pretend & play vegetable cutter. I gave him the vegetable , He will give it back to me to pretendthat I am eating. In between I asked him to pretend that he is eating also. Then I will ask him to cut them and he will cut them using his plastic play knife on cutting board. R even pointed me to all the vegetables when I asked him which one is Tomato,Green Pepper and others :)

R seemed to be done playing with it, So I asked him lets put all of them back in the box. He gave me the cardboard box and now asked me to pretend that I was eating that also. So I laughed and tickled him, Telling "You are being cute silly, we dont eat cardboard, he gave me this smile". He helped me to put all vegetables back in the box, But by the time we were suppose to put cutting board back in, He got up and ran away to dribble beach ball.

God, he has gotten so good at dribbling the ball, He can look somewhere else and dribble it non-stop without missing it. ....His way of Stimming !!

In between he played with me by passing the Beach ball.

R enjoyed another game yesterday, We both sat down on beachball and bounced . He was laughing, I tried to make him look at me. But majority of the time, he was looking away from me. Though he was following my instructions. He wont let me hold his hands or legs. But in between , I was able to hold his hands and we both bounced.

Overall it was a good interactive session. I had so much fun with him, He seemed happier because his mom is back :)

WEEK 12 - SON-RISE DAY 18 - Creativity and Motivation required !!

R's mom has been out for ta week to get training from son-rise.org to get more information on running these play-therapies with R. So I volunteered to go for an extra day on Thursday to fill in a spot.

R was playing in the basement with his dad. I took him inside the playroom.

R played with the ball, but now instead of spinning the ball he has gotten more into dribbling the ball. He did passed the ball couple of times to me also.

R played with flash-cards. He again got the flash car with house on it and pointed me to stairs and windows on the house. After that he threw the flash-card box away from us and all the flash cards were on the floor.

R also played with the truck again and gave me one of his truck. He was took my hands and made some baah sounds, trying to tell me as how should I move the truck on the wall . So we played with toy trucks by driving them across the perimeter of the room on the walls.

In between R was stimming by sitting down on the crash mat and rubbing his toes. R found another stimming method where he will lie on his back, with his legs bended and slide back and forth all across the room.

In between he will pull corner of his T-shirt from  the chest, I did the same. In my case I will make some noise also while doing that, R seemed to like that noise and if I won't do it, He will point at me, by taking his hand and pulling my T-shirt very gently with a smile.

I had conversation with R's dad and He gave me a very good suggestion. The suggestion came out of a conversation that he had earlier in day with R's mom on phone, she refreshed his memory . He told me  "We should try to reduce R's stimming time by coming up with something motivating just before he looses his interest in the game he is playing with us. This way he won't get time for stimming. But this requires great creativity which captures R's interests and motivates him also"

WEEK 12 - SON-RISE DAY 17 - Rohan seems to be missing his mummy

R was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. And recently got diagnosed with Apraxia . R is now 4 years old. We started SON-RISE program with R couple of weeks backs. SON-RISE is a Play-therapy program that I am volunteering for . The Play-Therapy is associated with son-rise.org to treat his symptoms related to Autism. When I refer to Stimming , it is the repetitive behavior R does while lost in his world

Besides all other challenges the biggest challenge for R is finding his voice, He just says Baah for everything.

R's mother went for a week to get training from son-rise.org. Today in the session it felt like he was stimming more, maybe his way of missing his mom.

But we still had our moments, the fun and interactive parts.

R has gotten really good at dribbling the ball, With this speed and control over the ball he amazes me every time.

At some point when he himself asked me to get the flash cards. he handed me over the flash - card with Peas on it. I pretended to eat them and he was giggling when I was doing that. In between when I stopped doing that he will try to do that also.

R took out another flash card with picture of a house on it. He was making Baah sounds trying to show me something by pointing his fingers at windows, doors and stairs. After that he was stimming with the card by putting and sliding the card under his nose, eyes. I did the same with him.

R was into his new stimming today. R will lie on his back, with his legs bended and slide back and forth all across the room. In between I will be making some noises and he gave me a quick look. For once when I stopped making those noises he looked at me , pointing to me like telling me to make the sound again.

R did passed the big beachball couple of times to me.

After that he was into playing with the trucks. Infact he handed me over a truck also to play with him.

This was towards the end of session. I asked R to hand me each toy to put it back. He handed me each toy to put it back.

Something interesting happened, once we came out of the son-rise room. R loves to play with his sister's doll house. He likes to open and close the doors in the house. The interesting part - "R pointed me at windows, doors of the door house. And when I made the connection they looked same as on the flashcards !! "

Our biggest challenge besides all other challenges is to help R to find his voice !!

WEEK 11 - SON-RISE DAY 16 - Handed me Flash Cards !!

Garage Sale is over. We raised enough money to buy R a nice toy.  I have not been participating in R's play-therapy session that actively, as my son Y keeps on getting this cough, cold and congestion due to bad environmental allergies. Ah, pook kids- cannot even say anything !!

Yesterday I went over to play with R, even though we only spent 45 minutes in the playroom.

R was on his swing. I asked him lets go to play in the playroom. I helped him to get out of the swing.

R played with Beachball and Trucks. His favorite games. R has gotten very good at dribbling. For next session I was thinking to remove the Beachball and Trucks. I wanna see what will he be interested next to play with !!

R asked me to take the stuff from shelf with just Baah sounds. We are still trying to figure out what will help him to make more sounds.

In middle he will come to me so I will give him High compression hugs and tell him "I love you sooooo much" !!

At some point I was able to draw his attention towards the flash card box. He sat down next to me. R started handing me over one card at a time. R will flip the card , starte at the picture, then flip it to look at the description. I did the same, He looked at me. At that time I took the opportunity to read him what was written on the flash cards. I was able to read him only one flash card. R handed me over about 8 flashcards, then he just walked away to play with his trucks

And after that we left the room.

Dear R ,  I am waiting for that day when you will start reading those cards to me :)

This week was crazy with lots of things on my plate. But got all of them accomplished one by one .

I went over to R's place to give some stuff for R. R has graduation day in school, so went over to give some Gluten-Free cookie/cakes. R's mom was trying to feed his sister A. So I took R for a short session in the son-rise room.

The best part of whole session, R seems to be more motivated in asking for games from the shelf to play. Even though he points and gives Baah sounds.

Towards the end of session I asked R Helped me to put toys back on shelf yesterday for first time. "I asked him to hand me over a specific toy by saying the name and he did with smile". Even though when he was handing me over Beach Ball, he was trying to spin it towards me.

Thinking how much fun  its gonna be if you can tell me how you feel

WEEK 10 - SON-RISE DAY 14 - Questions in my mind !!

This morning I was not in the mood to write at all, Something just made me think whole night and this morning. I wrote things on my blog but then erased them. My thoughts are going back and forth . I am not talking about just an autistic child but any child - My mind was just full of basic questions .

I realized dealing with kids is just whole another science, has anyone ever Mastered this Art ?

Keeping yourself calm in situations which has no handbook !! Finding answers to questions like How OR  Are we suppose to respond and rock a  2 year old when they just wanna cry and get up in middle of night ?  Are we adults not suppose to eat and take care of our health because we are just so busy with kids? Are we suppose to take frustrations out on some other member of the family because we are just so exhausted in ourselves ? Are we suppose to still give a child its vitamins even though we know they will throw up ?

I did had my play-therapy session with R. Even though session lasted for an hour but it was interactive.

First Interaction happened when R asked me to get him Ball, Hula Ring, truck  from the shelves. Even though he just used his Baah sounds to get them.

Second interaction happened while we played with the beach ball, which he loves a lot. He tried to dribble and bounce it back and forth from the crash mat to the wall in the same order as I did. Even though in between he was playing by himself also.

Another interaction lasted couple of minutes but at least a start. I got some flash cards and ask him to give me  Pear,Door,Tacos and Sale & Pepper ones. R picked the correct ones till Tacos, handed it over in my hands. After that he was not interested anymore. But I felt very happy that he did played flashcards with me even though it was for couple of minutes !!

After that he asked me to put every game back on its spot on the shelf by giving me the object and telling me All-Done using sign language. He also tried to say Baaa

R asked me to open the door , I told him Magic words. But he still wanted to go outside. I praised him and that still did not made him stay.So I went to the rule "When nothing is working just do nothing and stay calm", So I went to a corner in the room across R and sat down quietly making some funny noises with my mouth. I felt R was looking at me non-stop when I made those noises. I am not sure was he stimming or really looking at me. But then I heard him trying to make same noises. Then he came to me and was trying to put his hands on my mouth.

I have to say R you are full of surprises and I still have to understand you. At the same time I love you, A and Y so much.....trying my best to get best for all of you kids !!

WEEK 9 - SON-RISE DAY 13 - R made 2 Potato Heads !!

First it was my allergies and after that R got severe congestion, cold and cough. We had to take R to ER, where they gave him steroid injection. R's doctor put him on antibiotics, steroids for him to get better. Finally R is doing better, though still little cough and congestion.

R has been just making various Baah sounds, but that's about it. In the son-rise playroom also he asked me to get him all different toys by pointing and making Baah sounds for them.

Yesterday's session I felt R was tired but at the same point I will have to give Kudos to R for making 2 potato heads with me.

We both sat down, R took all the parts out from the Potato Head jar. I started handing him over the parts and told him where they will go. He started putting them together. In between somewhere twice or so he got lost in his thoughts, so I waited for him  to give me eye contact. And finally we finished 2 potato heads. I made Mr Potato head touch its nose with Mrs potato head. R saw me doing it and he did the same.

Our second interaction was bouncing the Beach ball back and forth from the wall while we are standing on the crash mat.

Source:Google Images

Our last interaction was dribbling the Beach ball.

All other times R was just stimming in the mirror or on crash mat. I joined with him and he gave me couple of eye contacts during that time. I had to give him High compression hugs to calm him down when he came towards me couple of times. Every time I gave R hug I told him from my heart "I love you sooooo much", It just felt so good !!

WEEK 8 - SON-RISE DAY 12 -Potato Head Day and R Hugged me again

R was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. And recently got diagnosed with Apraxia . R is now 4 years old. We started SON-RISE program with R couple of weeks backs. SON-RISE is a Play-therapy program that I am volunteering for . The Play-Therapy is associated with son-rise.org to treat his symptoms related to Autism. When I refer to Stimming , it is the repetitive behavior R does while lost in his world

After a long week of my allergies, finally I had my chance to run the play-therapy with R. I went over and asked him to give me hug. I had my arms wide open pointing towards him. It took him a moment but he came to me and wrapped his arms around me.R hugged me again !!

This afternoon R made various Baah sounds to get his toys from the shelf in playroom. First half of the session for R was more about spinning the ball. I joined him in spinning the ball. It is so interesting to watch him spinning the ball, He does it with so pefection and precision. I can never spin the ball in the way R does.

Somewhere when he made eye contact with me. I climbed the crash mat and  bounced the ball back and forth from the wall. R tried to do the same thing.

Second interaction with R was our favorite running game.

And the fun part- our longest interaction happened - when R played the Potato Head game with me. We had party with potato head !! R was assembling the Potato Head in the order I handed him the parts and pointed it to him.

Today was overall a Happy day for me. Dear R , I look forward to more fun days !!

Week 7 - SON-RISE DAY 12 - R tried to dribble the Ball

R Tried to Dribble the ball !!

We have learnt to celebrate little things in life with R. Things that are trivial are important for us in this Relation with R

Yesterday after a week , I finally got my chance to run play-therapy with R. R was having cough and congestion, still not fully cleared up. But I thought let me go and run my play-therapy session since I won't be seeing him next week. I am going on vacation for a week with my family to Arizona.

R was in basement driving his little cycle. R's mom gave me some snacks to make him go in the playroom. R wanted to bring his cycle in the playroom also, So explained R  "You can have the snack if you come inside the room, but cycle stays outside." . R immediately left the cycle and came inside the playroom.

R started munching on his snack and I joined him. Then I brought out little surprise for him, A Keepon. R looked at it for a second, squeezed it and threw it away. So I kept it back on the shelf.

Keepon-

I had couple of interactions with R and he also gave me multiple eye contacts , But eye-contacts were not that long enough. Even though I was able to interact with R more than usual.

R was spinning the ball, so when R made eye contact with me, I started dribbling the ball. R tried to do that also.

At one point R was spinning the ball towards me, I spinned it back towards him. This went couple of times. At some point when R gave me eye contact. I threw the ball towards the ceiling and back into my hand. R tried to do the same thing once without spinning. But rest of the time he used my trick to spin the ball from a height

R looked at me again at some point, so I asked him. "Do you want to play running game" He understood and took his position across the wall in front of mirror. When I was counting, R made sounds like Bbbbbb.... everytime. And we ran on "RUN". I stopped after first game. R came to me to play another game by taking me next to mirror in standing position and he made Bbbbbb sound. So we ran again.

R was making Bbbbb sound for everything in yesterday session.

I am still waiting for the day when R will count for me and say "RUN" !!

Mother's Day - R's GIFT to her MOM

R is 4 years old and has Autism and Apraxia.
Every little step from R is a celebration for us.
And proved
ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS !!

It's late, and I already tweeted it. But I do want to mention this in my blog.

R's mom called me and said that she went to R's school for Mother's Day function.

R's teacher told R that his Mom was here in the school, But at that moment he did not paid attention and was still busy doing his thing. Afterwards when all the kids sat down and took there seats. While other kids were busy listening and performing actions from poem.  just kept on pointing to his Mom in the room.

R's teacher told R's Mom, that he does know how to perform this action. But R's mom told teacher "She does not care, she just knows this is first time R pointed to her and that's more than enough for her"

For first time R pointed at her mom in the school ! He has never done that before !!

Way to go R , This is an truly awesome Mother's day Gift !!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

Week 6 - SON-RISE DAY 11 - Story of Little Boy

There is a little boy , I know him since the day he was born !!
But I feel like I still don't know him and so much to learn.

I went to volunteer for my  play-therapy session with R. I left my 2 yr old Y with my husband. Looks like Y missed me during that whole time. My husband told me he cried for 10 minutes after I and was left looking for me !!!!!  I was like Ah , different thoughts crossed my mind but got settled after I started watching the show "New Girl" :)

Yesterday's session went well. R interacted with me couple of times.

R was spinning the ball, so I spinned the ball in parallel to him. His Blue Beach ball came towards me and he made eye contact with me which was long enough for me to make a game out of that spinning ball. I threw the ball towards him and stood half way up with my hands wide open. R spinned the ball bback towards me. I again threw the ball towards him, trying to get him throw straight instead of spinning towards me. He did it , He did it - He threw the ball towards me without spinning - TWICE !!

Second interaction I had with R with the same ball, but this time I bounced the ball towards the wall and back to me. He tried to do the same thing Twice !! Nice Job R, I love you so much :)

We again did our running game where he ran twice with me on count of 1 to 10 . AFter that he wanted him to be carried to take the Foam pillar down from the rack. I tried several times so that he can point and tell me what he wants, but he just kept on raising his hands so that I can pick him up. So I did and he grabbed the Foam pillar from rack towards the floor and that was end of that part.

At one point as he made eye contact with me, I took the juggling balls and juggled twice, He  watched me, came to me and told me with sign language "All Done" !! I will consider that as my Bonus round of interaction :)

R did got Hyper couple of times and was trying to tackle me using his head. So I gave him deep pressure hugs, which worked everytime !!

Overall I had really good time with R in this session.

Dear R , I look forward to more wonderful sessions with you where you play, I play with you. You talk and I listen to you !!

Week 6 - SON-RISE DAY 10 - Tried to Imitate me !!

R was looking at me and smiling moving his head and if I remember correctly also tried to move his shoulders  !!

R was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. R is now 4 years old. We started SON-RISE program with R couple of weeks backs. SON-RISE is a Play-therapy program that I am volunteering for . The Play-Therapy is associated with son-rise.org to cure his symptoms related to Autism. I refer to word Green Light sometimes which means getting eye contact from R. When I refer to Stimming , it is the repetitive behavior R does while lost in his world

I got the opportunity to run another son-rise session with R. We started our session eating Pistachios and while R was enjoying his Pistachios, I also joined him. I made couple of faces and moved my head with my arms from left and right.
R also tried to move his head from left and right, but he could not imitate of moving the arms. Though he did tried, it felt like. This interaction went on for a 1-2 minutes.

Another interaction we had during the stimming phase was when R was looking into the mirror. I went and stood in front of the mirror like in a running position. R stood next to me and he was making noises like telling me count, so we can run. I counted giving him chance to make some sounds at every count. At this point not sure if R made the same sound or different sounds for each count from 1 to 10. He ran on every run and this went on for 1-2 minutes.

R had this foam pillar placed on top of the shelf. He wanted me to lift him up to get the pillar. So he will come to me and make noises. We did that back and forth for a minute. But afterwards I realized maybe it was better to make him point and ask him what he wants !! As I said I am learning also as I am going.

Rest of the time R was jumping and stimming across the sides of his crash mat. I was doing the same thing. In between he was getting Hyper and coming to me like he wants to tackle me or hold onto something. So I will give him deep pressure hugs, which will calm him down

And after that we left the room

I am still waiting for the day when you will count so loud that I will have to ask you slow down your voice !!

My First Autism Talk to Public

I made through the Autism Talk without tears !!

Somehow I managed to give my first talk on Autism in public in front of  250 people to a non-profit organization to raise Autism Awareness and Find R volunteers.

I thought I should put it on my blog also. Here it goes .........

Hello Everyone,

Past couples of years were life changing for me and my family. We discovered my nephew R who is 4 years old has Autism . I asked  if the organization can take on this Project to help R with Autism. A project which can help him lead normal life and show hope to other kids with Autism.
Since I just have 3 minutes I am going to keep this short and sweet , limiting to 4 simple questions.
First Question,What is Autism, Autism is a generic term for a group of complex disorders in brain development. These disorders are characterized in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication and repetitive behaviors..….Basically kids are lost in there world and has no interest in yours. They are not able to implement simple things from life like wearing your socks or raising your arms when putting on a tshirt.

Second Question,Why I am talking about Autism,  To raise awareness and ask for help !! We sometimes feel sorry for people who have kids with special needs. But did we ever think this can happen to any of us also. I never thought someone in my family will have a child with Autism. Autism has been declared epidemic by CDC in USA. 1 in 88 kids have autism,This number is 1 in 45 for boys. This means our generation/or newer generation should be worried or thinking even before having kids. There is no way to even detect that something is wrong with the child during pregnancy or even after birth. There are hundred different theories on cause and treatment for Autism but nothing proven.
Third Question,What does R have It took So many efforts, going in circles, disputes with insurance, pushing the doctors and searching on Google. Finally after 3 years doctors could diagnose R with Autism and Apraxia. Now Apraxia is another disorder which sometimes comes with Autism, where he does not know how to use his words. R is under multiple therapies, diet restrictions which may help to improve his symptons

I have known R from 4 years. I can count the number of times he called me aunt because they are none. I can count number of times he made eye contact with me, because they are 5. I can count number of times he hugged me because it’s just 1

Last Question,How can you Help.
R’s parents are running play-therapy which is associated with non-profit son-rise.org. They are looking for volunteers to run this play therapy. In this therapy program you have to spend time playing with R. You have to gain his trust, faith and show your love to bring him back to our world. This therapy program itself can take several years, but we are looking for 2-3 month commitment per volunteer . We need 12-15 volunteers per period. Play- therapy has treated lots of kids with Autism and the concepts are very similar to what has been offered in Parenting workshops like:-

Use positive, constructive, attitude towards your kids.

Don’t say NO and yell at them.

Gain there trust,Love and faith and they will come to you and I can go on forever to add to this list !!

R is now 4 years old and I ran 6 therapy sessions with R, After those sessions, He hugged me for first time and has made eye contact with me 5 times.
No prior experience is required for volunteering for this Play therapy !! We will need volunteers every 3-6 months. Anyone who can devote 2 hours every week even if it is for 2-3 months can volunteer. R’s parents will provide necessary training which is about 2 hours. Interested volunteers don’t need to bring anything just your love, devotion, patience, enthusiasm and positivity. Please help R to lead normal life and show hope to other kids like R  by taking on this project .

I have some flyers with me . For more information or flyers, you can contact me anytime, I will be here !!

Thanks !!

Week 5 - SON-RISE DAY 9 - Kicking the Ball !!

R kicked the ball for couple of seconds !!

My son Y had cold, fever. I couldn't go to for R's play-therapy session. But finally I had my husband come home earlier to watch Y so I can go for R' play therapy session. R was running around the house when I got there. I took his favorite snack, which my reader may know by now and took him downstairs for play-therapy session.

I requested R's parents before the session to remove all the tables, trampoline from the room. He was stimming too much with all those objects. R sat down eating his favorite snack , I did the same. R fed his doll again , which he does every-time before munching on it.

After that R started spinning the Red ball and he also threw the stuff on the floor like ball, doll away. I joined with him. He stopped and was spinning the ball again. I joined him also. This time while we both were spinning the ball, he looked at me. I quickly got up and kicked the ball with my feet. R did the same thing for once

R kicked the small Red ball even though it was for couple of seconds !! HA HA , I felt like to scream at that time. HA HA !! I said to myself Baby Steps DEAR, Baby Steps DEAR !!

Finally  he got little excited and was coming to me, He was laughing and trying to wrestle with me using his head. So I tickled him and he went back to spinning the ball.

When he looked at me again, this time I tried to kick the ball again, but he did not wanted to. But he got up and started turning the knobs on closet door. I joined him. Now he gave me sign to open the closet door. I praised him and opened it for him . He took a toy car out of the closet and started rolling it back and forth. I did the same thing with him.

After that we played little more and left.

This was a short, sweet session full of enthusiasm !!

Week 4 - SON-RISE DAY 8 - Tickle Day

SON-RISE DAY 8 - R ENJOYED TICKLING !!!!!!

I had my another session with R. Now as soon as I go and visit R to have Play-therapy session with him. He quickly comes down with me. He has been very cooperative about it.

But I think I caused little chaos in R's playroom by getting Table and Trampoline in the room at same time. All these things gave R more reasons to do stimming by going under them in a order.

R will go through these stimming steps

  1. He will stand facing to the mirror and move his face left and right pushing the mirror attached to the wall
  2. He walks across the length of the wall
  3. He will crawl under Trampoline
  4. He will sit down on Trampoline
  5. Now he will go under the table
  6. He will crawl out of the table
  7. He will go back to the mirror
  8. And repeats rest of the steps in same above sequence

I did the same thing with R over and over again. This went on for about 15-20 minutes.Somewhere in between he passed by the baby book lying on the floor and took a break to look at it. He quickly went over all the pages. And then threw book in the air. He has been throwing stuff, even R's mom told me. So I joined him on basis of suggestion given to me by my twitter friend @HelenSm and threw soft toys in parallel in an open empty box. He looked at that and immediately stopped throwing stuff !! Though I was thinking he will throw more stuff.

And this time when he came to the table, I had a wooden puzzle on the table with all the pieces out of the puzzle. He came to arrange the puzzle. I tried to do the same. But the pieces that I will arrange, he will arrange them again.

Somewhere he came to me and I tickled him, He liked it and I ticked him more and more. He was laughing so hard and I ticked him more and more. He will come towards me and run his head into my lap. I just tickled him

We again played his one of the favorite running game and this time  I when I said 1,2,3 Run, He made some noises on each count.  I am still trying to figure out are they just noises or he is trying to say something similar. Sometimes I feel maybe because I want him to say something so badly, I am just listening in my head !!

After that he was tired and sitting down in deep thought touching his toes. Then he got up took my hands, flipped the light switch. This meant lets Go .

But I felt even though he was stimming in most of the session, R was more interactive also. In Next session I want to join him without any Table and Trampoline in the room.

Week 4 - SON-RISE DAY 7

SON-RISE DAY 7

R was diagnosed with Autism 2 years backs. R is now 4 years old. We started SON-RISE program with R couple of weeks backs. SON-RISE is a Play-therapy program that I am volunteering for . The Play-Therapy is associated with son-rise.org to cure his symptoms related to Autism. I refer to word Green Light sometimes which means getting eye contact from R. When I refer to Stimming , it is the repetitive behavior R does while lost in his world

Usually I am suppose to volunteer with R on Wednesday. But I told R's parents they can call me anytime when they need me. So yesterday was one of the day, I think one of the volunteer may have quit or just did not called in.

I took my 2 yr old son with me. I left him to play with R's Mom and R's sister A. I  took R downstairs in the son-rise playroom. I always start with giving him Pistachio to set him in a good mood to play with me. He ate pistachio and started stimming with pistachio shell in between his fingers. I did the same. He gave me eye contact for a minute and then got up.

This time he went up and down in straight line over the couch cushions on the floor . I did the same in parallel to him. He holded my hands, which meant "Lets go out of the room". I again explained him nicely that " I love u so much, lets play, more we play, more magic happens". He went back inside the room.

Now we played with colored scarves. I count 1,2,3 and released the colored scarves up in air at "Hurrah". I will wait for him to say "Hurrah", But presently he just makes some noise and will release the scarves with me, But he won't take it all the way up, He will just release them at his eye level. After that he will jump on trampoline as scarves are falling down !!

After that he sat down on trampoline and was touching his toes and was deep in his thoughts. I did the same thing.
Now he again wanted to go out of the playroom, so I distracted by playing running game. I will count 1,2,3 run and we ran. Then on second time, I waited for him to say something, He made some noise on each count .I praised him for making noises even though they were not exact words and we ran. He played this Twice only .

Now he went towards the wall and was trying to like push the wall with his face going left and right. I did the same thing.

Then suddenly he again wanted to go out side the room. This time I put my hair in front of my face and said " Where did I go"? He came to me and removed my hair. I tickled him and said "1,2,3 I see you" !!  I will give him chance to say "I see you", but I could not get out even noise on that. This went on for about 25-30 minutes.

After that he started rolling on the floor, I rolled with him.

Now he seemed tired and was throwing away things in the playroom. Infact I asked for suggestions  from my friends at Twitter as what to do in this situation?

To calm him down I gave him Playdough. He sat down for like 20 minutes stimming by rolling piece of playdough in his fingers. He does not like anyone else touching his play playdough. I already had taken small pieces of play dough before giving it to him. I started stimming with him. The times I brought play-dough in front of my eyes, He looked at me for couple of seconds.

After that he was ready to leave, so I praised him for letting me know even though it was by holding my hands and bringing me to the door.

As we were going up my son heard my voice and came running towards the door. R does not like someone standing in front of the door, when he is walking up from playroom, so he started screaming. I asked R's mom to come and I took my son away from the door to calm him down.

I am still waiting for longer eye contacts and words from R !!
